Cara Figlia - When It Runs, We Catch It

Cara Figlia,

I'm sorry you have this cold. I know it's hard on you because you don't feel good and don't know why. Luckily, it's not so bad, as colds go. But that runny nose... Oh boy! It keeps running, and you HATE having your nose wiped. I don't much enjoy wiping it either, but it has to be done. Otherwise your snot runs right into your mouth, and that's just gross.

When I get close to your face with a tissue, you turn your head side to side, away from the tissue, and cry and scream. I feel like the worst mommy ever, but I have to wipe the snot up! I'm not actually trying to torture you or hurt you. I try to be gentle or make it a game, but you still hate. every. second.

I hope as you get older, you will at least understand why I'm doing it and not freak out quite as much. I can only hope.

Ti Amo,
Mama

Oh the snot must be wiped! If not, sometimes the snot will go in the eyes and then you get PINK EYE!

Then mommy gets pink eye and they treat her like she has the plague at work. Lovely.

Oh, how I loathed the fighting over the wiping days. Fortunately, we have moved into the cooperative stage. We must ask permission prior to wiping, and respect the 'no' if we get it, but now our Toddler sits still for it. Much easier.

(I popped over ImposterMom, mostly because you might be the first person that didn't get all goofy on me when I made any sort of comment regarding translations. One of my projects in college was to translate some passages in the Spanish version to English, and then compare them to a published translation. They were vastly different. The goal of the assignment was actually to demonstrate how the meaning of words is in people, not in the words themselves. From that moment forward, I stopped taking things literally.)

Ah, the snot faucet... One of the caregivers at my Pumpkin's daycare wiped her nose with diaper wipes when I was there picking her up. And Pumpkin didn't even whimper. I stood there with my mouth open feeling like a real loser of a Mommy to have never thought of that. It doesn't always work, but it does help when she has a constantly runny nose that gets sore.

Don't even get me started on that squeeze bulb thing. She hates it, and screams, and makes me feel like a baby torturer.

Diaper wipes! That's brilliant! Thanks for the tip, cloud. I will definitely try that!
