Question of the Week - Dream Job

If you could do anything, what would your dream job be and why?

Me? I'd be a romance writer--a successful romance writer who writes good plots and characters. I would prefer romance as the genre because I tend to get caught up in what I write when I'm writing fiction, and I love romance novels because they always have a happy ending. I don't need to be caught up in the world of murder mysteries or dark dramas. Maybe I'd write sci-fi/fantasy or chic lit, but I would really love to write well-written, interesting, historically accurate historical romances or paranormal romances.

And you?

This is the one question that has vexed me for the past 16 years. Not that I am 18, just a bit *ahem* older, but from childhood up until entering college, I wanted to be a wide range of things, such as a cartoon, a Charlie's Angel, an undercover cop (loved 21 Jumpstreet), a fashion designer (drew Bob Makie Barbie-esque frocks on my Big Chief tablet), a Broadway singer, and a music therapist (my first undergrad degree selection). But now I am none of those things (especially the cartoon...darn it) and I still haven't a clue what I want to be when I grow up.

My dad has always been there for me as I have struggled with the issue of one's life work, and he has said that many people he has met do not use their vocation to identify themselves, but use their avocation. He worked in management at manufacturing company and always used the example of one of his employees that worked hard at his job, but really lived for his life as a Boy Scout leader. I try to remember that, which isn't easy, especially in our culture where the first thing you ask someone when you meet them is "Where do you work?". Now if I could only figure out that darn avocation of mine. :-)

My dream job: a woman of leisure

That's right, dream job = independently wealthy.

HA, not likely. In the mean time I would settle for something part-time and flexible with full-time money. Also not likely. I do happen to have a job interview tomorrow though. More money, career climb and more flexibility so we'll see.

I'm with MommyEm, I don't know what I want to be when I grow up either. But I never imagined it would so glamorous as a Project Manager. Blech.

When I grow up? No idea.

Ideal job? Something that involves a lot of reading fiction, using my scathing wit and grammatical skillz, and cups of hot tea. So...fiction editor? Book reviewer?

But unfortunately, I am SO not into the "dues paying" that these sort of jobs require.

In an alternate universe, I would love to be a recipe tester.

That's a tough one. I'm with mommyem in that I've wanted to do a lot of things over the years.

It would have to be something creative which is why I've always thought I'd like Interior Designer or Specialty Cake Baker/Artist (like Duff on Ace of Cakes). But then as with my current job, I'd have to deal with clients. And I'm starting to realize I'm not fond of dealing with client egos and performing the little tap dance that every consultant has to do with them (am I bitter?).

Therefore, my dream job would be CEO or owner of a successful company where others can deal with the nonsense and I could pursue these creative outlets without the need for them to make money. OR use the extra time to volunteer for a hospital, animal shelter or other cause.

I once thought travel writer, but I actually think that is hard work and a good way to ruin a perfectly good trip.

Independently wealthy would be nice, but only if I wasn't born to it. I remember watching a documentary one of the Johnson and Johnson heirs did on his "set", and thinking "now there are some screwed up people".

Come to think of it, I wouldn't want to get rich and screw up Pumpkin that way.

Geez, I don't know. I once did a career coach exercise and discovered that I should be... exactly what I am now (on a good day)... a scientist/project manager. So maybe I just want a job with more good days?

hmmm...well there's 2.
Bomb Tech--my dream career I worked so hard for but will never happen.
And Lady Of Leisure--even less likely.

All you have to do to be a romance writer is ... do it. You could. Why not? :)
