Question of the Week - Music To Stick Around For*

I heard two songs I love on the radio the other day, and it got me thinking about songs which if on the radio, I wouldn't turn the station. Of course I started wondering what those songs were for other people. But as I started my own list in my head, I realized it was WAY to long. I mean, I'd have to say anything by Led Zeppelin, the Doors, the Beatles, Alicia Keys, John Mayer, Jimmy Buffet and so many others, especially 80s music.

Then it occurred to me that the true distinction I was wondering about, and this week's Question of the week, is:

What are the five songs that you will stay in the car to listen to, even after you have reached your destination?

All those bands and singers I mentioned earlier (and more) and that I love so much? I have their CDs, so I can listen to their music any time. But there are fewer songs that I will linger until the end. Most of them I even have on CDs (and iPod), but I love them so much for one reason or another that I will stick around for even when I'm in a hurry. So here is my five:

1. Magic Carpet Ride, by Steppenwolf
2. Stuck in the Middle, by Stealers Wheel
3. Southern Cross, by Crosby, Stills & Nash
4. Crazy for You, by Madonna
5. Sleep to Dream, by Fiona Apple

What about you? Do you have five or so songs that you can think of which you love so much you will put off whatever you are doing to listen until the end?

*Yes, I ended that in a preposition. Mostly to drive Londo crazy. Hehe.

I hate most music played on the radio. I've become an NPR geek. If not NPR than a CD of some obscure artist. But here goes. . .

1) Jamie Cullum — Get your way
2) Jason Mraz — I'm Yours
3) The Cat Empire — Hello
4) Medeski Martin & Wood — Where's the Music
5) Michael Franti & Spearhead — Say hey! (probably my favorite at the moment)

That's just today, tomorrow will be different.

Music for which to stick around??? Does anyone say that??

This is not in any particular order:

1. You're so vain- Carly Simon (yeah, I know, it actually started out as a joke, but I just love it)

2. Star Man- David Bowie
3. Bohemian like you - DandyWarhols
4. Grace- Jeff Buckley
5. My Sharona- the Knack

I have an Australian list, but I don't think anyone would know any of the songs ( unless you are over 40 and Aussie, like me, that is)

I always get stuck on this sort of thing, because my particular brand of crazy makes me obsess over whether I am picking the RIGHT 5 songs. Meaning, OMG, what if later I think of one I like better and then, there it is, in writing, WRONG. The horror.

So I will put 5 that come to mind, without claiming they the 5.

AM Radio - Everclear
Morning Train - Sheena Easton
Cecilia - Simon & Garfunkel (according to my mom, this has been a favorite since I was a toddler)
Hot Stuff - Donna Summer
Hallelujah - about a billion people have recorded a version, but I like this one best
TubThumping - Chumbawumba
Total Eclipse of the Heart - Bonnie Tyler
American Pie - Don McLean (and this takes commitment!)
Grace Kelly - Mika

That's more than 5. Just to underscore my not-following of the rules. :)

Also, I love lyrics. I'll sometimes listen to a song over and over just to absorb the meaning behind the lyrics (or if the lyrics just say something particularly well that I think or feel).

Here are a few of those, though there are many more:
2 a.m. (Breathe) - Anna Nalick
Because of You - Kelly Clarkson
Where I Stood - Missy Higgins
The Story - Brandi Carlile
I Hope You Dance - LeeAnn Womack
The Sunscreen Song - Baz Luhrman

List is just a current set.
Don't you Forget About me - Simple Minds (it's my song with my cousin :)

What's So Bad (About Feeling Good?) - Ben Lee

Probably anything Poe, if she was played on the radio

that's about it. But I do stay in the car to listen to NPR news clips if they are interesting.
