Question of the Week - Holiday Songs

There are a lot of holidays this time of year, and many holidays have music associated with them. I'm Christian, and I'm sure everyone has been innundated with Christmas music this time of year. Personally, I love Christmas music. Londo worked in retail many winters, and it took him years to get over how sick he was of Christmas music. Luckily, he's finally enjoying some (and even a lot) of Christmas music over the last few years. This is good, because I could listen to it just about all day long, and throughout the year, too.

This week's Question of the Week is:
What is your favorite(s) holiday song?

It doesn't have to be Christmas music, and you can be any religion and still enjoy other holidays' music.

My favorite Christmas song is Hark, How the Bells, although I don't ever hear it with the words sung on the local station that plays Christmas music this time of year. I learned it when I was in high school chorus and have loved it ever since. My second favorite is The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire).

For other holidays, I absolutely LOVE Adam Sandler's Hannukah Song. And around Halloween, I can't get enough of The Monster Mash.

How about you? What gets you in the holiday spirit? What do you enjoy listening to during other peoples' holidays?

"Same Old Lang Syne" by Dan Fogelberg reminds me of the days when I was younger, single, and spent most of the holidays at our neighborhood bar with my other single friends. The holidays were always a time for the out-of-towners to come "home" for a while, and everyone seemed to congregate at that particular bar, so the old friend/lover part of the song kind of gets me.

As happy and content as I am right now, baking Christmas cookies and watching holiday cartoons, that song reminds me of a different kind of holiday spirit that I'm glad I experienced for a while.

Usually I would instantly spit out some song from The Muppet with John Denver Christmas album... but in our house watching Phineas and Ferb has become a regular event and their new song: "I really don't hate Christmas" is becoming the new fav. (Plus I think this is bonus points for hitting all the holidays at once).

actually, my favorite Christmas song was one I recently discovered was written for the George C. Scott version of A Christmas Carol--explaining why I never hear it.

For beauty, I love Silent Night and O Holy Night.

For fun? The Squirrel Nut Zippers, Christmas Caravan album. Love. It.

Some Christmas albums though are ill conceived...like the one I have by Orgy. Yes. I said Orgy.

My favorite is "I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas" by Galya Peevey. It's just fun and silly.

"Parade of the Wooden Soldiers" on the Disney christmas sing a long dvd. We had it on vhs growing up and it isn't christmas without it. I can't believe I can now share the same songs and video with my own kids. T is always asking me to sing Frosty the Snowman and I can never remember the lyrics.

I love Jazz, so the soundtrack for Charlie Brown's Christmas is one of my favorites. Vince Guaraldi is awesome. I also found Chris Botti's December. not my favorite style of jazz, maybe too much easy listening for some. I find it relaxing though. James Taylor At Christmas is alright as well.

My parents had an 8-track called Disco Christmas and I recently found all of the songs from it on iTunes. My favorite one on that album is their version of Sleigh Bells.

My oldie favorite is Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree by Brenda Lee. Something about that song just makes me feel festive.

O Holy Night, for the music.

And Handel's Messiah, also for the music. I'm not religious at all.

I wonder if putting the Messiah on would help me locate my Christmas spirit, which seems to have gone AWOL this year? Christmas is just seeming like one chore after another this year. Which sucks, because Pumpkin is old enough to "get it" this year, and I'd like to muster more enthusiasm for her sake.

I love all the classics esp. I'm dreaming of a white xmas...

My brother who lives in CA used to make me tapes of the Dr. Demento radio show and my fave was his Christmas-themed songs like "I saw mommy kissing Santa Claus underneath the xmas tree last night..." and "watch out where those doggies go, don't you eat that yellow snow."

I just picked up a complilation CD this year produced by Putumayo World Music called "A Family Christmas" Excellent songs with Leon Redbone and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy doing the classics. Very nice.
