Question of the Week - Something New

Happy New Year!

I hope everyone had a wonderful New Year and New Year's Eve. Londo was not feeling well New Year's Eve, so I took the kids up to my sister's by myself, and we celebrated the Parisian New Year with her, my BIL and their kids. Why the Parisian New Year? Because it was 6:00 our time, so the kids were up and just starting dinner and we all got to say happy new year together! My almost-4-year-old daughter and almost-5-year-old niece had sparkling cider and the adults had champange. It was fun, especially since this was the first year my daughter had a clue as to what was going on. And we have fun hanging out with my sis and her family.

I'm working on some New Year's Resolutions, but I'm not ready to really write them down yet. Except for one: This year, I will do something I've always wanted to do but haven't yet done.

In fact, I think that every year I'm going to do one thing I've always wanted to, whether it's read a book or see a movie I've meant to read/see for years or go someplace I've never been before or do something I've never done before.

This week's Question of the Week is:

What is something that you've always wanted to do but haven't done yet?

Feel free to pick something you want to do this year, too!

I actually haven't completely decided yet. Maybe I'll do all of the things on my list, or maybe I'll just say I'll do one of the following:

- Go camping with my hubby and kids. (I've been with Londo before, but that was prior to kids, which will add a whole other dimension.)
- Read Jane Eyre. (I have seriously been meaning to read this book since high school. I can't believe I STILL haven't read it.)
- See the movie Sliding Doors. (I often think about the concept of this movie, yet never have actually seen the movie and have been meaning to since it came out in the theaters.)
- Get my PMP certification. (It's a project management certification for work. I've been talking about getting it for years, and now that I'm out of the baby-fog, I feel I really can get it done.)

What about you? Do you have things you've always wanted to do but never done? Any big adventures you want to plan? Any books covered with dust that you are dying to read? Do you think you'll do something this year that you've always wanted to do?

-Take a romantic out-of-town weekend trip with DH - without the kids (scheduled for early May!)

-Movies: "The Rite" with Anthony Hopkins, comes out at the end of January. (The trailer looks sceeerry!!!). I'm also going to finally watch "Herb and Dorothy" on Netflix.

-Books: "Unbroken" by Laura Hillenbrand. Read an excerpt of it in "The Week" magazine and got totally hooked! And also the next Sookie Stackhouse novel by Charlaine Harris (book #11, "Dead Reckoning") that should be coming out in May. The first chapter is available now for free on the author's website.

-Take a Spanish class to improve my piss poor grammar!

I'll bet you'd like Jane Eyre.

We celebrated New York new year with Pumpkin, and then stayed up to give a nod to the California new year before heading to bed.

I want to take my kids to New Zealand. I'm not sure that it will happen this year, but I hope it happens soon.

Well I wrote a list of resolutions on Moxie recently so won't repeat them here.

I'm making changes to my diet seeing as I get older I am becoming more and more intolerent to food that I ahve always eaten. I really want to increase the amoung of coloured vegetables and fruit in my diet, eat more fish and less other meat ( maybe only once a week). Reduce the amount of yeast products ( I think yeast is the culprit), which will be far the hardest thing to do seeing I love me some bread.

I want to read the new Eco in the original language which will be no easy task, seeing he isn't that easy to read in English. But hubby put it on my Kindle so I'll give it a go.

I've always wanted to go on safari, go dogsledding, go whitewater rafting, go on a dino or archeological dig, ride the mongolian steppes, go on a longish term sailing trip....

Wow. I think maybe I can handle the dig part this year since that's fairly easy.

There are a lot of things I haven't done, but most of them, I don't want to do anyway.

Even my resolutions for this year are mostly things I have done before but just need to do again in 2011 (donate blood, donate my hair, more rhymes with rocking roots, run 5ks).

Basically, I am boring.

(This comment brought to you by the letter Zzzzz.)

I guess the big thing for me this year will be the fact that I don't plan to return to my cushy well-paying job and I am going to make the leap to start my own firm instead. It's something I've always wanted to do and it's taken me a long time to work up the nerve. Also, it means relying on DH to support our family for a time while I build my business. He is completely supportive but that makes me feel vulnerable - I've always been so self-sufficient.

Other than that - I've actually given myself permission to not do anything new, or strive for any great experiences this year. It takes the pressure off. I have a whole list of experiences and 'to-do's' that I wrote down on the eve of my 30th birthday (my forty before 40 list) but I have accepted that most of them will be reserved for the second half of my 30s when the kids are a little bit older. A lot of them are travel related. Right now, I am just going to accept the limitations of my life, having two small children.

I love that you celebrated the new year with us here in Paris!

I have resolutions, but as far as new experiences go, this year is less about adventure and more about nesting. But I am still aiming for my French driver's license. And maybe this will be the year I read Proust?

@hush - Oh, a romantic out-of-town trip with hubby should have been on my list, too! And I love that you want to take a Spanish class. Someday, I'll brush up better on my Italian with a class.

@Cloud - That's a long flight, I'm sure. I'm sure your family will all go soon though.

@paola - Eco, eh? That is a toughie! Good luck!

@Becoming Mommy - I want to ditto your list! Or at least go along with you to some of those!

@SarcastiCarri - Actually, donating blood needs to be on my list for this year too. Now that I'm not preggers or nursing, I'm ready to donate my universal donor blood again! I will not, however, cut off my hair to donate again. It was important to me to do that at least once, but I've been missing my long hair so much! Oh, and none of that stuff sounds boring, especially "rhymes with rocking roots!" hehe.

@Jac - Wow! Good for you starting your own firm! How exciting and terrifying! I wish you the best on that!

@Parisienne Mais Presque - I actually thought of you while toasting! I hope the driver's license process goes smoother this round, but somehow I doubt it!

The PMP is a lot of freakin' work to study for/pass the test. I have no doubt that you can do it, but just be sure you WANT to because it'll cut into your family time quite a bit.

I'm very thankful I did it before I got pregnant with BabyT, because there's no way I'd have that dedication now :P

For me, it's getting down to a healthy weight. Being an older mama (35) means I'm starting to feel sort of rickety and that does NOT work with a toddler. I also want to set a great example for her about taking care of herself. I don't want her to understand/notice my struggle with weight, so I'd like to put it behind me before she's old enough to pick up on it.

Learning I Have Hypertension

This past winter, I discovered I have developed high blood pressure. This came as a surprise for me, since I generally had always had blood ...
