Update: The get together is cancelled! Sorry, but the people who had actually responded that they could come have had to cancel. Which is actually good for me, because my son is sick (again) and I was having trouble getting childcare coverage. Maybe next time it will work out better!
Don't forget that tomorrow is the DC area get together for the grown ups! We're meeting for lunch at Gordon Biersch in Tyson's Corner II, McLean, VA, at 11:00. Table will be in the name "Cara." Anyone else able to make it? Comment or send me an email so I know if I'm getting the right size table!
Mama mia! Life with two middle school-aged kids is tough! But beautiful shining moments between the times of frustrations make it absolutely worth it!

DC Area Grown Ups Lunch
DC area people! The results are in, and I'm calling it!
August 2010 DC Area Grown Ups Get Together:
When: August 28, 11:00
Where: Gordon Biersch in Tyson's Corner II, McLean
Who: Any grown ups in the area who want to get together with other parents and actually talk instead of chase kids around the whole time. Also, little babies are welcome.
How to Find Us: I'll put the table under "Cara" so just ask the hostess to seat you with us.
What Do I Need to Do? Let me know in the comments here or via email (caramamamia at gmail dot com) if you are coming so I can get a table big enough.
I'm really excited to get together! I hope everyone can make it. We are going to do a get together with all the kids in September or October... or maybe both! But this is our chance to hang with and actually talk with other adults/parents in the area.

Recipes Review, Bloggy Book Club and August Meet Up
Recipes Review
Get this: I posted a cake and muffin recipe review on my review site! Didn't know I had a review site? Well, I haven't posted in a LONG time. But it was one of my New Year's Resolutions to start posting on my review blog again. I've got all sorts of things I've been wanting to write up, but to get me going at all I started with some easy recipes. They are good ones I found on allrecipes.com, though. And the upcoming reviews are even more interesting!
-----------------------
Bloggy Friends Book Club
In early July, hush did a book discussion for The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. I definitely have plans to read the book and add a (hopefully) meaningful comment to the discussion. If you've read it, head over and post your thoughts!
I had had this thought that those who like reading and are interested could host a book discussion on their blogs and/or comment to participate, thereby creating a sort of Bloggy Friends Book Club that meet at each others' places to discuss the book of the month.
So I'd like to host a book discussion of Midwives, by Chris Bohjalian on August 11, 2010! If you are interested, get the book, read it and come here and comment on August 11th.
-----------------------
August DC Area Meet Up
I know everyone is more than ready for an adult-only get together. Let's do it in August! Please vote for the day and time in the poll on the side panel. There are lots of options because it occured to me that I should offer lunch and dinner times for each day. I'm unable to do the weekend of the 21-22, so I didn't include those.
I'm thinking we meet in McLean and go to one of the restaurants there. I really like a few in the Tyson's Corner II mall. What do you guys think?

July DC Area Meet Up - Changing to Sunday
Sorry this is so last minute, but I need to change the meet up to be on Sunday. I have a funeral to go to on Saturday.
Hopefully Sunday is an even better day for people to come. It's the last day the Green Meadows Petting Farm is open this summer, so be sure to go on Saturday or Sunday if you want to catch it before next fall!

July DC Area Get Together - Petting Farm
Please note the date change to Sunday, July 11th!
Hey, DC area people!
I know I know that I said I would do a grown-up only event for June... but... well, June kind of got away from me. And to be honest, Londo and I can neither afford a nice night out in terms of money and time. We've only gone out once the kids are asleep, and then we have had my mom or MIL stay with the monitors. But lately, my mom's been busy and my MIL wasn't able to come up to visit until last weekend.
(Side note: MIL and FIL stayed with sleeping kids last weekend, and Londo and I went out for ice cream and a movie! An early anniversary night out for us! We saw The A-Team, and it was awesome!)
However, I've got a great idea for July 11th: a trip with kids to a petting farm!
This location is up north of me, so not too easy to get to for some of you. But we plan to go a week from Saturday anyway, and I thought others might want to come. Here are the details:
Date & Time: July 11, 2010, 10:30 AM - ??
Place: Green Meadows Petting Farm, Frederick, MD
Cost: $12 for everyone 2 years old and up, those under 2 are free -- CASH (or money orders) only
Food: They sell snacky foods, but there are nice grassy areas for setting outa picnic. Previously, we've left around lunchtime and gotten food at the McDonalds down the street, but I'm going to suggest to Londo that we do a picnic this time. It would be fun to have a picnic with a bunch of people.
Things to do: Pet and see all sorts of farm animals and other animals, including a zebra, emu, llamas, kangeroo; milk cow; watch a show with the animals (maybe just the horses? I haven't seen it so I'm not sure); a hey ride in the fall, not sure about the summer; learn about farming and animals from knowledgeable, friendly workers and volunteers.
So, who's in?

Question of the Week - Oh, The Places You'll Go
I had so much fun at the May Meet Up 2010! Two other lovely women (Raia and eep) made it with their sons, and I brought both of mine with me. As always with the kids along and in a kid-friendly place, we were able to chat only a little. But the ladies were great, the kids adorable and the place was awesome!
We went to the Be With Me Children's Playseum in Bethesda. I have to admit, I'm very confused as to why places like this call themselves "playseums." I don't think they are anything like museums at all. If I could name them, I would call them "play cities," or at least that's what I'd call this one since I've not been to any others.
It wasn't what I was expecting. I thought it would be some big room with lots of areas and lots of gym equipment, like a McD's Playland thingy. It wasn't that at all!
This place had a lot of little rooms, all open without doors (except the bathroom). Each room was like a "store," such as the grocery store filled with pretend food or the pet store with real animals (bunnies! frogs! lizards! hamster!) that they were allowed to pet or the diner with a play kitchen and table off of a bakery where they could take a little "class" and make real pies! Of course, my daughter LOVED the art studio and the construction site with it's sand box.
I could go on and on about how neat it was. I will definitely be going back, and I could plan to spend all day there!
This week's question of the week is:
Where is your favorite place to go with your kid(s)?
I'm sure my husband's answer is our backyard. We have a lot of room, a glider, a little slide and other fun things back there. Our daughter LOVES to go out back and play, as does Londo.
Though I really enjoy going in our backyard, it's not my absolute favorite place to go with the kids. I like the pool and the playseum, but that's not it either. And although the zoo and petting farm are really close to the top, I think my favorite place to go with the kiddos is to a friend's house for a playdate. I like the low-key-ness of being in a house, but I like to get out of my own house. I especially like sitting around and chatting with friends and/or family while the kids play.
How about you? Do you like big adventures with the kids or low-key hanging out? Do you have a favorite place to go, or do you simply like staying home?

May Meet Up Final Details
DC area folks! I've got finalized details!
First, for those who haven't already read the general plan, I will copy it below (originally in this post). For those who didn't see my last comment on that post, I had totally spaced out when I came up with the time and forgot that I have a Water Babies class with the Pookie from 10:30 to 11:00!
Not to fear, I have come up with a plan and coordinated it with the Be with me Children's Playseum! Here are the updated details (for links, please go to the previous post, since I don't have time to re-link everything):
Who's Invited: Anyone in the DC area who is interested (bloggers, commenters, Ask Moxie readers and silent lurkers), spouses* and kids
-Day: Saturday, May 8
-Times: 10:30 and 12:30
-Place: Be with Me Children's Playseum in Bethesda
-Cost: $5 per person, any age
-Other Info: Be sure to read the Safety Policies, Playseum Manners, Sickness Policies and Food Allergy Awareness pages! This place isn't like the At Play Cafe we previously went to in that they ask you to be within arms' reach of you child at all times.
Additional Details:
-Two Meet-Up Times: Because I can't get there at 10:30, there will be a second meet-up time at 12:30 for anyone who wants/needs to come later. Hopefully, this will also give flexibility for people whose children take naps.
-Place to Meet: I have contacted the Playseum, and they said that there is a Family Room at the end of the hall with instruments and couches in it. I asked for them to put up a sign over one of the couches, and they said they would also put a sign inside the front door to direct people there.
-The Sign to Look For: It will say DC Area Meet Up! We're an actual group now, peeps!
-About Lunch: There are tables there for food and snacks, but they don't serve food there. Please bring a lunch if you plan to be there during your kids lunch times. If you don't bring anything, there are lots of restaurants right near the place. They will stamp your hand if you leave so you don't have to pay to get back in.
Am I missing anything?
I'm so excited to see everyone, and to try this place out! I'm thinking we'll go low-key and free in June, but I've just heard such great things about this place that I wanted to try it!
*I wanted to be sure everyone saw that spouses are invited, because this place does ask you to be right near your children, which can be hard to do when you have more than one and you are by yourself. Though don't forget, there will be a group of us hopefully all watching out for each others' kids!

Help Me, Internets! I've Been Oblivious!
Now that I'm coming out of the "survival mode" of the infant stage and the fog of winter (because of my SAD), I'm starting to realize some things that I feel pretty lame for not having noticed before.
I'm not even going to write about the things that I've been oblivious to or left undone in real life. Instead, I'm going to talk about things in this awesome online community I have become a part of that I feel stupid for missing.
-Some people who I feel that I've become good online friends with have blogs that I didn't even realize existed! How could I have missed the names with obvious links to google profiles with blogs listed or the blogs themselves. Am I blind?
-Some blogs that I did discover previously are not in my reader, even though I totally thought they were and that the person just must not be updating. Once I realized that I'd missed some, I've checked out my reader and tried to update it.
-I didn't realize that some people who are on Twitter and even following me were not in my Follow list. These are people whose blogs I read and have even commented to me on Twitter. I've just gone through and added a bunch of people to my Follow list, but I'm concerned that I'm still missing people who I want to follow.
-I wanted to keep up with email correspondence and replying to comments on my blog, but I keep lagging behind or don't have the time. I'm trying to parse through my overwhelming gmail inbox, but that's not a quick and simple task.
-The DC area meet ups pretty much don't happen in the winter, but I'm finally getting back to organizing them. Who the heck put me in charge of these?
-Perhaps the thing I'm most disappointed about is the way the email support group for DC area people has not become what I had hoped it would. I know that it is up to me to really get it going, but for whatever reason I have not been able to. I'm not quite sure how to make it what I want it to become, but even when I do send out email, there isn't a lot of response. I guess I've been hoping that once we start doing the meet ups again, people will start emailing more. However only two people responded about the May meet up. The point of it was to become a network of support for each other, but no one seems to be reaching out.
So I come to you all as a petitioner. Please let me know the following:
-Have I missed your blog either by not visiting or not having you in my blog roll (which should mimic my reader)?
-Am I not following you on Twitter?
-Have I missed an email or a response to something you wrote that you would like a response to?
-Can you come to a DC area meet up in May? Which day? (Please note that there have been two requests for it NOT to be the first weekend of May, so it won't be this weekend.) Where? I can just decide all this and whoever shows up shows up, or you all can have some input.
-Does someone else want to help me organize and keep up with the DC area meet ups and the email group?
-In what ways can I/we improve the DC area email group to work better for you all?
I like you people, and I want to put in the work to keep up with my online friends. Can you please help me do that? Unless you can't stand me and wish I would stop commenting on your site. In that case, you can send me an email to let me know and I total will. After I leave one last comment telling you to suck it!

DC Area May Meet Up
It's been too long, my friends, since we got together. I feel very bad that I haven't organized anything since... I can't even remember when... last fall?
But it's spring now, the snow is gone, the sun is out and the weather has generally been nice. So let's all get together in early May.
-I'm going to put up a poll on the right side of my blog for you all to select which day of the first 3 weekends in May is good for you.
-I'm thinking we should go to the Playseum in Bethesda. I've heard great things but not gotten there myself yet. What do you guys think?
-Have any other suggestions?
We still haven't done an adult get together in a long, long time. Maybe we can in June? I'm going to try to have more regular get togethers this spring and summer, and hopefully it will carry over into the fall and winter. I would love help with the ideas, organizing and email group. Any volunteers?

DC Area Meet Up - 10/17 Museum with Hedra and November Meet Up
If anyone is interested, hedra and her family is going to the National Museum of Art (West Building) for the armor exhibit this Saturday. They will get there about 12:30. Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it, but she was wondering if anyone else wanted to meet up. Send me an email if you are interest, and I will hook you up with hedra for any other details.
I still want to do an adults get together (so long as no one minds my 4 month old along). My September and October got really crazy really fast, so how about early November? I'm thinking of dinner, or maybe even lunch, on 11/7 or 11/8? Post a comment to let me know if you are interested, or email me!

My Friends and Family Rock!
I had so much fun this past weekend. I've gotten to spend time with friends and family, which I always enjoy.
At the DC area meet up, I got to spend time with friends and their kids. I thought the train and the playground at Cabin John Park was fantastic, but it definitely had us all running in different directions after the kids. I'm hoping we can do another meet up in maybe mid or late September--this time adults only so we can sit around and chat.
My BIL got to visit over the weekend and meet the Pookie. He was great with the toddler and baby, as always. We had fun hanging out, and he was extremely helpful at the park (when Londo and I were running on 3 to 4 hours of sleep, courtesy of the Pumpkin).
And this week, my good friend MommyEm has left her daughter home with her husband and come to spend the week visiting and helping me! It's her first trip away from her daughter, who is 2.5 years old. And it's just been great to have her here. Last time I saw her, I was visiting her and helping her pack--over a year ago. Not only is it so great to hang out with her, but she has been an incredible help already. She's entertained the toddler a ton, held and changed the baby a bunch, done dishes, cooked and fixed food, done a million little things that have helped enormously, and provided me with important adult conversation and time spent with a good friend. Plus, we are going shopping at the outlets tomorrow, something I don't think I could do without her help and company. She's leaving Friday, and I wish she could stay longer. In fact, I wish she lived a few doors away, as she once did when we lived in Georgia.
These special get togethers and visits with friends and family are so great, and I haven't even taken into account all the great support and visits we get from our local family and friends! For example, my SIL (the one with 3 year old twins and a 14 year old) has come over a few times in the last few weeks and spent 5+ hours just helping in whatever way was needed. I am truly blessed, and I hope you all have friends and family that are as fun and great.

Meet Up Tomorrow, and I Love Yous
For those who are coming to the meet up, it's supposed to be partly cloudy and highs in the 80s tomorrow! I don't have a back-up plan, so I hope it doesn't rain.
We'll be there around 10 (if I can get the kids ready and out the door in time). I can't wait to see everyone!
-----------------------------------
Here's a cute story for a Friday afternoon.
The Pumpkin is pretty good about professing her love for us (when she's in the mood). And after my heart melts when she says, "I love you, Mommy," I often respond, "I love you, too." (The "often" was for the "too" because I always tell her I love her when she tells me that--and I tell her many other times.)
Well, lately, she has been saying right after me, "I love you, too." So then I'll say, "I love you, three." And then she says, "I love you, four." And we'll continue up a few numbers until we're both laughing.
Oh, I just think she's the sweetest, most incredible girl in the world!

DC Meet Up 8/1 and Email List
Hey, DC Area people.
First, I think that August 1st sounds best for most people. So let's say we meet that Saturday at about 10:00 in front of the train depot at Cabin John Regional Park in Rockville, MD? IIRC, there are a couple benches right in front of the building where you buy the train tickets. I'll try to grab those, probably nursing the Pookie while Londo chases the Pumpkin. (Note to self: check to make sure Londo can make it that day, otherwise phone a friend/family member to chase the Pumpkin.) I figure we'll spend a few hours there riding the train, playing on the playground and maybe eating some picnic food. Who's in?
Second, I've been thinking about those of us in this area who need support. I think we could be doing more than just getting together 3 or 4 times a year. What if we had some sort of email list that we could use for venting, for requesting help and for doing more impromptu get togethers (like if someone is going to Butler's Orchard and sends out an email to the group to see if anyone else wants to join them).
What do you guys think? Want to send me your email addresses so I can put together a list? We would all have each others email addresses, so be sure to send me one you are comfortable giving out to people. I won't send it out to anyone who isn't in the email group. If you want to do this, email me at caramamamia at gmail dot com with the email address you would use.

DC Area Meet Up in August
My DC area friends, how about we meet up in August? I'm thinking the first or second weekend, which would be August 1st, 2nd, 8th or 9th. I was thinking we could meet up in Rockville Maryland's Cabin John Regional Park Just off of I-270. It's got a fantastic playground and great picnic area, which are completely shaded by trees. It also has... a miniture train to ride!
I'm thinking as long as we meet early and stay in the abundant shade, we should be okay. What do you guys think?

May Meet Up This Saturday
We are meeting at the At Play Cafe in the morning of Saturday, May 23. I am planning to get there between 9:30 (when it opens) and 10:00. We'll stay as long as people are able. Although my daughter does not usually nap on weekends, we like to still pretend there is a chance so we will probably try to leave around 1:00 or so.
I think I'll be pretty easy to find. I'll be the 5'2", 9-month pregnant woman with a 6'4" husband and adorable toddler. I'll probably be wearing a purple dress and looking a lot like Barney or Grimace. Maybe I'll wear my black dress instead. I make no promises.
A couple things to note:
- Since this is an indoor location, there is no need for a backup rainy day plan. We'll just call this the final plan.
- There is an admission fee for the play area $8 for the first child, $6 for each additional sibling, but babies under 8 months are free.
- Socks are required for all children and adults in the play area, so even if you are wearing flip flops or sandals, bring some socks!
- There is a cafe with breakfast and lunch items which sound pretty good.
- If your child is exhibiting flu-like symptoms, they may be asked to leave the play area, especially considering the swine-flu hubbub. Hopefully, if you child has those symptoms, you'd be staying home anyway so as not to get the other kids sick. Personally, I don't think I could handle my toddler or myself being sick at this stage of my pregnancy! :-)
Here is the list of people I believe will be attending:
- Cara, Londo plus 1.5
- Colleen, maybe Justin plus 2
- Stacy plus 1
- Trannyhead, Mr. Trannyhead plus 1.5
- Dana, My Goofy Daddy plus 1.5
- Kate, maybe hubby plus 1
- Sonia plus 1
So that's 10-12 adults, 8 kids running around and 3 babies in bellies. Whew! We are going to be quite a crew. This is going to be fun!
If anyone else wants to come, just let me know!

Allergies, Cops and DC Area Meet Up (Oh, My!)
Because I'm even more oblivious to things than normal, I found out only yesterday that this week is both Food Allergy Awareness Week and National Police Week. These are two topics that mean a lot to me, so I'm going to talk about them a little before I get to the post about the DC Area Meet Up (which looks like it will be 5/23!).
----------------------------
Since it looks like the Pumpkin is allergic to peanuts, awareness of food allergies has become especially important to me. I highly suggest everyone learn at least a little about food allergies, because even if your kids don't have an allergy, one of their friends or familily members might. It's important to understand how to be respectful, informed and considerate of those with food allergies.
I have always thought, what if it was my child who could literally die if she was exposed to ______? Wouldn't I want understanding from others, not just eye rolling and frustration from another parent who can't pack a lunch with, say, peanut butter? Now that it might be (probably is) my child, I really hope that others try to learn a bit about how serious these allergies can be and want to learn to create environments that are safe for ALL children.
I don't yet know much about the food allergy world, but there are other bloggers who do. Please check out some of these other bloggers who know more about this stuff and have links to resources with even more information:

A family member of mine was a police officer in DC for more years than I want to count right now. While I've always been extremely proud of this person and what he has done, it is not easy having a police officer as a family member. (Nor is it easy have a member of the family in the armed services, fire and rescue or so many other dangerous professions that many people just take for granted, but today I'm going to focus on the police force).
You never know when the call might come. If that call comes, you never know how serious it might be. Police officers put their lives on the line every single day. They run into danger while most everyone else is running out. They protect others even if it may cost them their own life. They bring criminals to justice. They search for the truth. They put the wellfare of others and the community in front of their own. Without the police, thing truly would fall into disorder and chaos.
This honorable job with honorable men and women can come at a truly high price. When a police officer falls in the line of duty, the police force and the community they serve suffer. But even more is the family and friends they leave behind.
I have to stop writing about this now, because I'm too emotional to write what should come next. I'll just leave you all with this: If you see a police officer, thank him/her for their service. If you are in the DC Area, there are plenty of police men and women from across the country here this week remembering those who have fallen. Let them know that you appreciate them.
----------------------------
Okay, let's move on to some fun stuff. Crazy, emotional, hormonal pregnant woman needs to not dwell on sad things like children who could die from an allergy or police who have died.
The poll clearly shows that May 23rd is the winning date for a DC Area Get Together. It turns out that weekend is Memorial Day weekend! But since it's a Saturday, I'm guessing the BBQs and other get togethers won't interfer too much with a play group.
Many people have requested an indoor place in case of rain. I agree that this is a good idea, however I am concerned about the crowds on Memorial Day weekend, especially if it is raining. Perhaps if we get to the At Play Cafe early enough we could claim a good spot. I think early is also important for those of us with kids who need an afternoon nap (not that mine will actually nap for me, but I've got to keep trying her). The Play Cafe opens at 9:30 on Saturday, and I believe I could be there then.
Another suggestion a few people had is the National Building Museum (which was also a contender for the last meet up). I know nothing about this place, but it sounds good! It opens at 10 on Saturdays and has free admission. (Don't you love the price of museums in DC?)
I'm also totally game for planning the get together at a park/playground (Stacy suggested a few) and having a back-up rain plan. I'm willing to make the call a day or two prior, but I'm not sure if you all need more specific plans in advance.
So if you are planning or hoping to come, please leave a comment with the following:
1. The fact that you are planning/hoping to come
2. Your name or alias so I can keep track
3. How many kids and adults would come with you (everyone is welcome!)
4. Your location preference
5. If you are okay with meeting in the morning
6. Your feelings on last minute rain decisions
7. Howcrazy awesome I am for attempting this when I'll be in my 9th month of pregnancy
That's all I've got for now, that I know of. I do currently have the memory of a goldfish, and I've always got the tendency to ramble on and on. So there might be something I forgot and lots of things I said that couldn't have been edited. Either way, I'm going to hit Publish Post now!

DC Area Peeps! Let's Hang Out Again!
You know it's going to be a great day when you wake up in the night crying twice from dreams that weren't really that sad. Oh, let's also add all the other times you woke up because your getting-sick toddler came to bed with you and your partner and tossed and turned all night.
And by "you," I of course mean "me." And by "great day," I of course mean "crazy-emotional-pregnancy hormonal day."
So cheer me up, my friends, by agree to a DC Area Meet Up in May! I'll put up a voting for the dates in a side bar shortly. So please vote on a date. Also, leave a comment about a location.
Because I missed the Meet Up at the Play Cafe in Reston, I was wondering if you all wanted to go there for this meet up? Either that, or maybe somewhere downtown?
Let me tell you my reasoning for NoVA or DC. In May, I will be even heavier with child. But by the next meet up (hopefully in July?), I will have an infant and will want to meet my neck of the MD woods. And since we seem to be all over the place (and someday will have to meet somewhere towards DE for hedra), I'm trying to vary the local. Soooo, what do you guys think?

DC Area Cookie Swap?
Apparently the Burgh Bloggers did a cookie swap. I am not above blantently stealing that idea from them. Do the DC Area bloggers/commenters/readers want to get together and do a Cookie Swap? We could meet up at my house, bring lots of cookies and hang out. With or without kids and spouses? Let me know, cause if we do, it probably has to be in the first half of December so we all have our cookies in time for the holidays!

DC Play Group - I'm Too Sick!
I'm so so sorry, but I got really sick in the middle of the night. Something I ate did NOT agree with me. We think it was the salad I had last night because I was the only one who ate it. I was throwing up every hour from 12:00 to 7:00. Was that too much information?
Anyway, there is no way I can make the play group today. La Folle Maman has agreed to try and coordinate at the Play Cafe. I'm sad because not only do I feel like crap, but I'm missing meeting up with everyone! I was really looking forward to it.
I hope you all have fun. Please tell me all about it!
