Lately, the Pumpkin has been very into names. When you ask her what her name is, she tells you her nickname (the one we use regularly). If you ask her what is her full name, she will tell you her full first, middle and last name. She will do the same for the Pookie, Londo and me, although sometimes she says Daddy or Mommy as our first names with our middle names and last name.
I once wrote about how she named a stuffed duck toy Mr. Duck. That was the first toy that the Pumpkin named. Around that time, I asked her what her baby doll’s name was, and she said Baby. I wasn’t sure she was really naming the baby doll so much as just calling it a baby. (It turns out, she was indeed naming the doll, and that cute name has stuck.) But those names seemed pretty basic to me, like she was in a very early stage of understanding names.
Along with her recent understanding of peoples’ names, she has also started coming up with more imaginative names for her toys. A few weeks ago, she was playing with these four little toy dogs she has and she named them. The red one is Fireman. The purple one and yellow one are Crumple and Sissy, although which is which sometimes changes. The green one’s name, however, keeps getting changed. I’m not sure why. Sometimes the name sounds like Cyanide and sometimes it sounds like Dinny or Binny. But the other three names are absolutely consistent. In fact, the little dogs were put away for a week, and when she rediscovered them, she still called the red one Fireman and the purple and yellow ones Crumple and Sissy. And I still have no idea where she got those names!
And now, she has named her other baby doll. Last weekend, she was watching a show with flowers who are animate. One flower’s name is Marigold. Well, she suddenly decided that to name her other baby doll Marigold. I love this name. It’s so pretty, and I’m really fascinated that she took a name she heard and applied it to her doll because she liked it. So now if you ask her what her baby dolls’ names are, she tells you that one is Baby and one is Marigold.
I remember loving to name my toys and stuffed animals, which is why I’m probably so excited about this stage in her development. I’ve always loved names and think the naming of things is important. It’s pretty awesome to see the ability to name things develop in my little girl.
Mama mia! Life with two middle school-aged kids is tough! But beautiful shining moments between the times of frustrations make it absolutely worth it!

This Is No Name Game
I have previously mentioned that Londo and I have very different tastes in names, especially boys names. I insisted that he and I go through the book with over 55,000 names in it. And we did, on our trip down to Atlanta. A nice way to pass the time in the car. Except... we simply cannot agree on a name.
Londo and I usually are on the same page about most things, but this is just not one of them. We did come up with a short list, and that list has quickly whittled down to just 2 or 3. You'd think that's a good thing, right? We're getting closer! Except... neither of us seem to really like the names on our list.
It feels like we are just settle. And I hate to "settle" for things. To be frank, I really like to get my way, but do so in a way that has Londo on board because he realizes I'm right. That's not too much to ask, is it? hehe.
With the Pumpkin, we had a short list of 3 names, but both of us really loved the name we picked for her. And I love it more and more each day. It's really beautiful, has a bunch of nicknames we can use, and seems to fit her well. So I've been waiting for the perfect boy name to jump out at us. For us to look at each other and say, "Yeah. That's the perfect name." But that ain't happening.
I must also admit that part of my frustration is that I've agreed that his middle name will be my husband's middle name, which was his father's and his grandfather's. I think it's no secret to my husband that I don't really like the name. The teasing factor alone is hard for me to get over. But it means a lot to him. Seriously, a lot. As in, we have been talking about this middle name for our son years before we even starting trying to conceive the first time! Finally, I agreed when we found out this one was a boy.
So in my mind, Londo already has given this boy the middle name and the last name. In my mind, that meansI get to pick the first name my opinions on first names should have at least a little more weight to them than his opinions. That's seems fair, doesn't it? After I brought this up to Londo, he begrudgingly agreed.
So back to the short list. Londospit out lovingly asked, "Then which one do you want?" And you know what I realized? I DON'T WANT ANY OF THEM! I'm guessing it has more to do with my frustration with the whole thing (and my crazy pregnancy hormones) than really not liking the names. I'm ready to just name him "Baby Brudda" and Londo is now just teasing me by throwing out the ridiculous like "Optimus Prime."
So not only do I have a big delimma about summer grooming and my oversized chest (yippie for Trannyhead answering my important questions today!), as well as so many other issues with being pregnant, but I don't think this boy is going to get a name! URG! Did I mention how much I love being pregnant? At this point, we've agreed to not talk about names for a couple of weeks and try again after a much needed break. I'm not sure it'll go any better, but we both definitely need the break.

What's In a Name?
*Updated at bottom*
The Pumpkin has named her first toy. It is one she has recently become attached too--a stuffed, terrycloth bath duck, which has a robe with hood and little ducky slippers on it's feet. We kept it in the bathroom for a long time, although never put it in the bath. She pulled it out one day and left it in our room. Then, all of sudden, she decides that it's THE TOY. She has to have it to go to sleep, she has to tote it around when she gets up and comes in our room in the night or morning. She leaves it in her room during the day, but always looks for it at bedtime.
And, she named it. She hasn't named any other stuffed animal, baby doll or toy. We call her baby dolls "baby doll" and her stuffed animals by the name of the toy ("Where's your lion?"). But one night, early in this new infatuation, she called the duck "Mister Quack." (At least, we are 90% sure that's what she said.) It's cute, so we are going with it. We all call him Mister Quack.
I thought to see if the Pumpkin would branch out in the naming department. I asked her one night what her baby doll's name was. She called it by her name (and she also called it baby doll). But it didn't stick. I think she was just pretending it was her because we were rocking the baby doll with us in the rocking chair trying to get the Pumpkin and baby doll to sleep.
I asked her one day recently if she had any ideas for names for the Baby Brudda. She did not seem to get it. As I have said before, she doesn't always seem to get new concepts, although my guess is she internalizes the concept for a while to figure it out, since she often seems to get it later (although we do continue to talk about it). So, she had no good ideas for names.
Londo and I do have ideas and opinions for the baby boy's name. Unfortunately, we have very different tastes in names. Londo tends to prefer classical, strong names, like Alexander and Christopher (I forget the girl name equivalents because it's been so long since we picked out the Pumpkin's name). I prefer names from romance novels or soap operas, like Hunter or Dare (short for Darius), for boys and hippy-ish names for girls, like River or Sienna.
I'm sure you can imagine how hard it is for us to find names we both can agree on, considering how different our tastes are. I know I can't name a child something as "out there" as I'd really like, and he knows that the name can't be too common or "normal" (in my opinion). We really lucked out on finding and agreeing to the Pumpkin's name, as it is traditional in nature, not way out there, not super common, sounds lovely and has some great nicknames. (We love nicknames.)
So far for the boy's name, we have ruled out Londo's top couple of names and my top couple of names. The top runner is a name that is becoming more common, but it's still different enough that I would be really happy with it. Londo has a good association with the name, and I just think it's cool. Unfortunately, no good nicknames for it, but you can't have everything.
Still, we haven't settled on it because I insist that we have to look through the boy's half of the names in the book with over 5000 names that I bought when we were choosing the Pumpkin's name. Londo is sure that our current top runner will be the one. He reminded me of his favorite example of how he knows right off when something is The One. When we went to pick out wedding china, he glanced around, pointed one set and said, "That one." I said, "Oh, no no no. We have to go through ALL of the books. Every page. We need to look at ALL our options before we pick one."
And after going through every last page of every since book of china in the store? I looked at him and said, "You're right. That one." The very first one he pointed to. He's good like that. BUT, I still need to see all the options so I also know that it's The One. I will even consider Mister Quack (although I will quickly dismiss it).
Update:
As for this site, Londo suggested Sweet Potato for the boy's pseudonym. It goes well with the Pumpkin, and is a good nickname. I'll probably go with that, although I still want to think about other options. It's my way.

Question of the Week - Blog Etiquette
I'm relatively new the blogging world, especially new to having my own blog although I have been reading blogs for a while. But Girl's Gone Child's recent post about other bloggers using a similar name got me thinking about blog etiquette. I do so love discussions of etiquette!
Which brings us to our question for this week:
Do you have any blog etiquette you would like to share?
My answer is based on GGC's post: Be sure to google your screen name/blog name before using it!
Now, please educate me on manners in the blogging world.
As an aside, I'm 20 pages from the end of Mansfield Park and I'm totally caught up in it! I have NO IDEA how it is going to end, nor am I sure how I want it to end! I'm sure I'll finish it tonight and write something up about it this week.

Flashing the High Beams
Who am I kidding by saying "flashing"? My headlights are stuck on high almost all the time. A friend and I were just talking about how our nipples are stuck in the "on" position pretty much since pregnancy. What is it about our pregnant and now nursing bodies that feel the need to announce to the world where our nipples are? I'm sure it's all part of helping the baby find the food source, but does the rest of the world need to know? As if I needed anything calling even more attention to my bignormous* mama breasts.
Someone please tell me it goes away. It must! But when?
Speaking of my boobs, Londo and I have realized that we can't keep referring to them as boobs, or even Magic Boobs, when talking to the Pumpkin. All the other names that people give them seem silly, but I think we are going with "nursies." I don't really like it, but I always refer to breastfeeding as nursing (e.g., "Pumpkin, do you want to nurse?") so I think "nursies" will be the easiest for her to understand. I've totally vetoed what Londo wants to call them. "Titty Monsters" is wrong on so many levels. I'd love to hear other suggestions, if anyone has any ideas.
p.s. I've added a quote at the bottom of the blog. I will change it up with all sorts of quotes that I love. Check it out!
*Note to One Tired Ema: I told you I was going to start using that word. It's totally part of my vocabulary now. I even used it at work the other day. Please thank Miss M for me. :-)

Question of the Week - What's in a Name
If you could name/could have named your child anything you want, what would it be/have been?
And in this bubble world, you could be pick anything and everyone would love whatever you pick (including your partner, family, and strangers), it would go great with whatever last name you had, no one would tease your child, and it didn't have any weird/bad connotations.
For a girl, mine would probably be Lily, or some name that could be shortened to Lily (as in Lillian or maybe Delilah). My second choice would be Sienna, my third would actually be the Pumpkin's real name, and my fourth would be River or Star or something equally as hippie.
For a boy, mine would be Hunter. Other names at the top of my list are Connor, Dante, or Marcus.
How about you?

Learning I Have Hypertension
This past winter, I discovered I have developed high blood pressure. This came as a surprise for me, since I generally had always had blood ...
