In honor of the Olympics, I'm wondering:
What is your favorite sport to watch?
It doesn't need to be an Olympic sport, after all it is about to be football season and I know that's Londo's favorite sport.
Mine is definitely gymnastics, and (as I've mentioned before) I love the Olympics especially because of the gymnastics. (PLEASE don't tell me the result from last night. I have it recorded and plan to watch it tonight!) My second favorite sport to watch is football. I loves me some football, especially the Redskins. I am indeed ready for some football!
What about you? Do you have a favorite sport to watch? Do tell!
Mama mia! Life with two middle school-aged kids is tough! But beautiful shining moments between the times of frustrations make it absolutely worth it!

Question of the Week - Superbowl Commercials (and My Weekend Woes)
Hey, internetters! Sorry I've been neglectful. It wasn't on purpose. My internet went down sometime on Saturday and has stayed down. So I didn't get to do a Cara Mama post yesterday, but it would have gone something like this "Cara Mama, wah wah wah... But I wanna play with the trash bag... ha ha ha... I love to be tickled... wah wah wah... I don't wanna go back to sleep... The clingiest, fussiest baby in the world (I'm too tired to figure out the Italian for this), Pumpkin"
But this is nothing new. In general, we had a really good weekend. My niece's birthday party was so much fun, and water babies on Sunday was a ton of fun. The mornings were very good, and she had one long nap each day. BUT she had only one nap each day (can you say transition time?) and had a melt down each night in the evening. She seems to be so tired--she has been a bit klutzy, especially yesterday evening. Each time she get a little bump, she gives some heartfelt crying instead of the usual brushing it off with nary a thought. I will save this morning's issues for tomorrow's post. For now, let's just move on...
Did everyone enjoy the Superbowl? I did not stay up for the critical 4th quarter, and missed quite a bit here and there because of Pumpkin-care. I'm not heartbroken, because I'm not a fan of either team. But I saw a lot of it, and some funny commercials. I caught commercials I missed this morning online (I love the internet). Which leads us to this week's Question of the Week:
What was your favorite Superbowl commercial?
You don't have to limit your answer to this year. But if you want to see some of this years best commercials (which were only okay overall), click here.
This year, I enjoyed the Bridgestone with the squirrel in the road, the Tide with the screaming stain, and (even though I can't stand him) the Will Ferrell Bud Light commercial. Last year, I LOVED the Taco Bell lion commercial. Of course, the best Superbowl commercials were Apple 1984 commercial and the Budweiser clydesdale 9/11 tribute (snopes.com is apparently the only place on the internet where I can find a video of that one). Oh, and speaking of Budswiser clydesdale commercials, I also loved this one from 2003.
How about you?

Daddy's Take: Oh Crap, Daddy's Flyin Solo

So, Cara has finally left me due to my obsession with Fantasy Football and Poker. I have to raise the Pumpkin myself.
Ok hyperbole (she likes to play poker and watch football too - score one for the good guys), but still, Cara is leaving town for a few days and it's Daddy's time to shine. I have watched the baby all day and night before. I have put her to bed when Mommy was working late, and I have taken care of her at all points in between. However, this time it's different. There is no magic-mommy safety net (patent pending) to catch the Pumpkin if she goes nuts. Mommy will be several states away, for more than 1 day! Yikes!
I will certainly make the most of the Daddy-Daughter bonding time. I picture it will be something of a cross between this...

And this...

Either way, It should be an adventure.
I will log my results in the same manner as Survivorman and if there is amusing video footage of the events, I will surely have it on youtube before Cara gets back :)
Wish me luck people, I am going in.

Question of the Week - Super Power
Well, I finished Anansi Boys, and once again Neil Gaiman rocks my world. I will do a bit of a review soon. Also, I of course need to address the Redskins game, which I will do now:
Why oh why do I even get my hopes up? That game was awful! They did nothing, nothing, more nothing, and then... Wow! They looked great for a few minutes, like magic--scoring two in a row, and almost a third, getting my hopes up... And then, crap! They fell apart. Again. Sigh. So the Redskins are out of the playoffs, as I knew they would be. But they did have a nice run for a while.
Now, on to today's post. It is Monday, and here at Cara Mama's that means it's question time. In honor of the supernatural nature of Neil Gaiman's writing, today's question is:
If you could have any super power, what would it be?
My answer is the same answer it has been for many, many years (as this isn't a new question for me to ponder). I would be able to become any animal, which would include the ability to talk to all animals since the ability to become an animal would enable me to communicate with the animals. But when I'm not the animal, I would like to look normal (and not be green).
I'm very curious what other people would be, and if you've given it a lot of thought, the way I have.

Question of the Week - Resolutions
First: Go Redskins!! We are in the playoffs! And I couldn't imagine a better way to get in than to beat the Cowboys! Now, on today's regularly scheduled post...
Happy New Year's Eve! I hope everyone is planning a night of fun and drinking. If I'm up at midnight tonight, it will purely be because the Pumpkin has woken both Londo and I. My plans for tonight include maybe having a whole glass of wine and going to bed by 10:00. My wish for New Year's Day is to be able to sleep straight until 5:00! It's a lofty wish, but every now and then it happens.
Are you making any New Year's Resolutions? If so, what are they?
Mine are:
1. To succeed in the To Be Read Challenge of 2008 (check out my book list on the side of my blog and here).
2. To stop using curse words in front of the baby, since she'll start to understand and maybe repeat them this year. Yikes.
3. To start working out again. Even if it's just getting back into my yoga DVDs. I need to find time for something. I would especially appreciate it if the Pumpkin slept all night and until about 7:00 or so, so I could get up early and work out before work since my ideal workout time is morning.
4. Do things earlier. Especially at work. I'm really bad for procrastinating, but then I get all stressed when I end up doing everything last minute. Let's see if I can be better this year.
Have fun tonight, kids!
I had forgotten my fourth resolution, so I've added it now!

I Wasn't Myself
Last night, Londo and I watched 300, which was a truly excellent movie. It's the kind of action-packed, adventure, hero-story I usually love. But this was the first time I'd seen it. Londo saw it--or rather most of it--in the movie theater. I had the option of seeing it with him in the theater with some friends of ours, but the ladies of the group decided to go see Music and Lyrics and I went with them. Usually I would pick the action flick over the chick flick, but I was over 41 weeks pregnant and not in the mood to see an action flick.
That's right, I was OVER 41 weeks pregnant. Can you guess why neither Londo or I saw the ends of our movies? The timing was impeccable, like a sitcom, really, when I hurried off to the bathroom, discovering my water broke and text messaging Londo with the news. But that's not what I wanted to write about today. I like the idea of writing my birth story on the year anniversary (like someone else I know did), so that story will wait.
But finally watching 300 got me thinking about when I was pregnant. I simply wasn't myself. A lot of things I usually enjoy and even love, I had no interest in. I didn't want to watch action movies or even football. I didn't want to play poker. My fantasy football team sucked because I didn't want to pay any attention to it. The only books I had any interest in were pregnancy books and parenting books. I didn't even want to have sex! (Poor Londo.)
I felt like my body had been taken over by some alien who was no fun at all. I don't know if was just me like that or if anyone else was like that. But no one warned me about this. I knew I'd be tired, moody, uncomfortable, but I didn't know that things I usually enjoy would hold so little appeal that I'd rather stick a fork in my eye than watch/do those things.
I'm happy to say that I enjoy all those things again. It took a few months for them to slowly come back into favor, but they are. I choose the movie 300 last night as what I wanted to watch. I've been winning at poker and fantasy football again. I'm reading a wide variety of books again. And the sex is fantastic and frequent! (I know you all were dying to know about that.)
So, when Londo says that he is ready whenever I am to start trying for another baby, I look at him and say, "You are ready to not have sex for 9 months?" He apparently hopes it will be different this time. I have to be prepared for the alien to take over again. Luckily, we are not trying just yet. I've got some time to be myself again.

Torture, Magic and Death of a Redskin
Apparently the car seat is the most evil device ever created to torture the baby! But my boobs... They are magic!
Thank you to all the women before me who have shared tales of what they've had to do to get a carseat-hating baby through a long car trip. I've now joined the legions of women who have put themselves in physical danger by angling myself over the carseat to get the baby a magic boob, all without the aid of a seat belt. But it was worth it when she drifted off to sleep...
And we had another rough night with the teething Pumpkin, but we made it through.
The same cannot be said for everyone. Sean Taylor, 24, a safety for the Washington Redskins, died early this morning after being shot yesterday. My and my husband's condolences go out to his family, friends and teammates, especially his 18-month old daughter. He will be missed by many.

Learning I Have Hypertension
This past winter, I discovered I have developed high blood pressure. This came as a surprise for me, since I generally had always had blood ...
